Still Looking Good
62That lady over there
I’ll be her - that lady over there
The one who is walking tall with very grey hair
She doesn’t seem to mind being old
Excuse me lady
Will you be my mould
Look she is still walking tall and smart
Perhaps not so fast but definitely with heart
Did she wake up one morning and ask
Where time has gone
Or did it creep up
On her slowly like the evening bird’s song
A smart hat upon her head
A long woollen coat
The sort I used to dread
Covered hands with gloves and underneath who knows
Slightly bent fingers to do up elderly clothes
Why do I want to be like her
Because it could be worse
Feelings expressed now in this little verse
I’m thinking of ageing and whether it is good or bad
Still I’m only half way there and the life
I’ve already had
It may have been full of ups and downs
But really I would say I am rather proud of being 40
still a young woman some would say
I thought of that old lady when I walked through
The park with my brisk walking
And wondering how long until dark
I thought and I wondered how warm is she today
With her curly fingers and her hair
Gone so grey
I guess sometimes we only see the things we touch
Forgetting that people’s feelings
Don’t count for so much
So when you feel forty it’s no time to gloat
But to start to think this winter
I’d be better with my coat

Jennifer, love this poem, thanks for sharing :)
Jennifer a nice way to approach aging as a comfort not a curse.
I really admire your way with words. This poem brought me pleasure this morning. It doesn't seem related but for some reason the words of Sir Walter Raleigh at the death of Queen Elizabeth came to mind: "She was surprised by time."
Very positive, beautiful approach to something that you cannot avoid, I enjoyed your poem. Better prepared than to be caught off guard when your still playing teenager.
Maturity, wisdom and stateliness all go hand in hand with old age. Great message...
